A metaphor used in attraction discussions

SMV usually expands to sexual market value; some writers use “sexual marketplace value.” It is community language for perceived desirability, often framed as though people could be placed on a common marketplace scale. The phrase describes that framing; it does not establish that such a scale exists.

A community thread proposing an SMV calculation uses the marketplace expansion and explicitly presents one participant’s definition. It is not a validated instrument, and its assumptions should not be adopted as facts about people.

Look for the missing question

Desirable to whom, for what kind of relationship, in which setting, and with what information? A single number usually leaves those questions unanswered. Preferences, compatibility, communication, and the context of a relationship cannot be recovered from a portrait.

As an illustrative example, two viewers prefer different profile pictures because one values a clear face view and the other notices a shared activity. Averaging their reactions would not establish a universal rank. It would combine different preferences and different questions.
